SHINING IN ABSENCE

2015

Troost had a very large and interesting collection that was bought by ACM (the Archive of Modern Conflict) in London after his death. Kessels decided to honour his work with a book and an exhibition. Troost’s knowledge and interests were so divers that it was impossible to capture it in just one book and exhibition.

That’s why Kessels decided to focus on something out of the ordinary, namely that which is no longer there. Because of the absence of the obvious ‘Shining in Absence’ forces you to search for meaning. Both the book and this accompanying exhibition provide us with context only, which leaves us with endless possibilities for interpretation.

Curated and designed by Erik Kessels in honour of Frido Troost, the photo historian who passed away in 2013.
